Redemption Realities I
Colossians 1:12-14; Ephesians 1:7-11

Colossians 1:14 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins.”

Our opening scripture reveals a fact of God’s Word. It says we HAVE redemption in Christ Jesus. Note the tenses. It says we have redemption; not that we are going to have it, but we possess it in Christ Jesus. In Christ Jesus, redemption is a fact, not a promise. Redemption is a divine buyback from sin and all its consequences. The power with which the devil terrorized the world was the power of death (Hebrews 2:14-15). The Word reveals that “The sting of death [is] sin; and the strength of sin [is] the law” (I Corinthians 15:56). The killing power of death is sin, meaning that without sin, death is a toothless dog. The ruling power of the devil, therefore, was sin. The first provision of redemption is salvation from sin. Beloved, the sin problem has been solved. Jesus solved the sin problem once and for all when He became man’s sin Offering and Substitute on the cross of Calvary. He took man’s place and bore the punishment that was due man. God made Him sin for us (II Corinthians 5:21; I Peter 2:24; Isaiah 53:1-5). With the provision of the remedy for sin, the devil’s power to terrorize was terminated eternally.

Not only did Jesus Christ die for our sins, but He also became our sin nature on the cross of Calvary. He identified with man’s sin nature on the cross. With His shed blood, He made provision for the purging of man and his conscience from dead works of unbelief and of the flesh and obtained for man an eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12-13). The redemption of the man in Christ is an eternal one; it is as everlasting as the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ! Beloved, sin was conquered right on the cross of Jesus Christ, and the conquest was sealed at His resurrection. Jesus’ death and resurrection are witnesses that sin has been defeated. The impeccable blood of Jesus is a permanent and irrevocable cure for sin. Faith in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for man is man’s access into this redemption. Faith in His shed blood is access to the remission of sin. Beloved, this is the reality of the man in Christ: “…sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace” (Romans 6:14).

Further Meditation: Romans 6:1-14; Colossians 2:10-14.
