The Reason for Redemption I
Colossians 1:12-14; Ephesians 1:7

Colossians 1:14 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins.”

It was the price of Jesus’ blood that was paid to redeem man back to God. Man, in the beginning, rebelled against God by disobedience. It was an act of rebellion that revealed distrust in God. God had loved man by creating a world for him to govern. He made everything for him to enjoy and gave him the sceptre with which to rule the earth. However, through disobedience to God, man sold out to the devil. Adam consciously handed to the devil the sceptre of authority which he had received from God (I Timothy 2:14). Adam had committed high treason. He had handed his right to rule the earth to God’s enemy. Man, then became subject to the devil through disobedience (Hebrews 2:14-15). Adam’s disobedience to God empowered Satan, thereby making Satan the god of this world (II Corinthians 4:4). Adam handed over the glory of the kingdoms of this world to the devil (Luke 4:5-6). What a loss! Because of this act, man became subject to sin, sicknesses and diseases, poverty, fear, oppression, etc. (Romans 8:19-22). The disobedience of man began the dispensation of the tyrannical oppression of Satan on mankind.

The justice of God could not leave man unpunished, lest God should become unjust. The consequence of Adam’s rebellion was death. Man must die because he had detached himself from God, the fountain of all life (Psalms 36:9). Death is not the cessation of life, but the separation from it. Man was separated from God, who is the source of both spiritual and physical life. So, man died, first spiritually, and secondly physically. It was a harvest of death for man because of the seed of disobedience he had sown (Genesis 2:16-17). The justice of God had to be satisfied by the shedding of blood (Hebrews 9:22). Man needed a substitute to bear the brunt of his disobedience for his freedom to be secured. Man needed to be legally bought back from the slavery of his choice. It was man who sinned, and man must be punished in his stead. No man on earth was fit as a substitute, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Adam had mankind in his loins when he fell. A man from heaven would be a perfect Substitute. God had to come in the likeness of man. This special incarnation is called Jesus (I Timothy 3:16).

Further Meditation: Romans 5:17; II Corinthians 5:17
