The Sower, Seed, and Soil
Key Verse: “But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty” (Matthew 13:23).
Text: Matthew 13:1-23 (KJV)
Message: One of the most well-known and profound parables of Christ is the parable of the sower. The parable is about a sower who sowed seeds that fell on four different types of soil: the wayside, stony places, among thorns, and good ground. The seeds’ fate was determined by where they fell. The only seeds that became productive were the ones that fell on the good soil. The seeds on the wayside were eaten by birds, the seeds on stony ground sprang up quickly but withered away due to a lack of soil depth, and the seeds that fell among thorns germinated but were choked by the thorns as they grew into plants. Christ also explained the parable. The word of God is represented by the seed, the preacher by the sower, and the various soils by the hearts of men. Some people have hearts that neither care about nor understand God’s word because Satan has blinded their minds, like the wayside kind of heart. The stony-ground heart belongs to people who hear God’s word but are drawn away by the trappings of religion and, lacking spiritual depth, are scorched by trivial difficulties. The seeds are fruitless in thorny hearts that are preoccupied with the concerns of this world and the allure of wealth.
