The Reason for Redemption II
Genesis 1:26-28; Colossians 1:12-14
Colossians 1:13 “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated [us] into the kingdom of his dear Son.”
In the beginning, God had a beautiful plan of expanding His kingdom to the earth. This great plan was an expression of His love to have another being rule the earth colony. He made man and handed over the dominion of the earth to him. However, man fell and lost his place. Adam lost his God-given authority to Satan through disobedience. Satan and death entered God’s earth colony through sin (Romans 5:12-17). At the fall, man lost his place and he was displaced by the devil, who took his place and began to run the whole earth (I Corinthians 4:4). This was contrary to God’s plan for man and for the earth in general. Sin came into the world through Adam’s disobedience, and death came in through sin. Sicknesses and diseases, lack, fear, and all kinds of oppression are the result of sin. Spiritual death is separation from spiritual life. Physical death is separation from physical life. To die spiritually is to be separated from the quality of life that comes from God’s sustaining life. To die physically is to be separated from the body. Adam lost touch with the life of God through disobedience. He eventually lost touch with his body nine hundred and thirty years later. Adam’s spiritual death meant that he lost touch with God’s Spirit, and the character of his nature became corrupted.
Man’s nature and character became alienated from God’s life as a result of the fall. Nothing else could renew man other than a rebirth so as to offer him the privilege of having a new life with the possibility of a godly character. The redemption of man that would be adequate must contain the full remedy for all the consequences of Adam’s disobedience; else it would be nothing but a placebo. Adequate redemption must contain a cure for sin and sin consciousness, dominion over Satan and all his demons, a cure for poverty, a cure for fear, a cure for spiritual death (i.e. the rebirth of man), a cure for physical death, and the restoration of the earth from its deplorable state. All these, Jesus came to do in His redemptive work for humanity.
Further Meditation: Ephesians 1:4-7; 2:6
