Be Filled with the Spirit

John 7:37 “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”

Ephesians 5:18-19 “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”

God’s plan for the new creation man in Christ is not to live the Christ life by the energy of the flesh, which is impossible, but to live it by the power of an endless life of God’s Spirit. In fact, living the Christ life is only possible by the Spirit of Christ; the resurrected life is not possible except by the Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. The Word declares that those who are in the flesh cannot please God; but thanks be unto God because the man in Christ is not in the flesh, for the Spirit of God dwells in us (Romans 8:9).

We understand that living the new life in Christ is not by human power nor human might, but by the Spirit of God. This is the reason the Word commands us to be filled with the Holy Spirit. It is by the Spirit that we can live out the life of God in us. We are strengthened and energised by the Spirit of God to be and do all that God has made us and has made ready for us in Christ Jesus. We cannot perfect in the flesh that which started in the Spirit. Flesh cannot do the work of the Spirit. Flesh cannot bear the fruit of the spirit.

Human effort at its best is human, and cannot produce the works of God. It is not by human power, nor human might, but by the Spirit of God. Being filled with the Spirit is the only way to live out the God life in the flesh. Hallelujah!
The Holy Spirit is the power of the believer to live the Christ life and to witness of Jesus to the world. We are helpless without Him, for He is our Helper, Comforter, Guide, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener and Standby (John 14:16-17). He is our advantage in this dark world of sin and godlessness. He is the One who illuminates our hearts with the revelation of God’s Word; He is our Teacher. To be filled with the Spirit is to be inundated by, soaked with and taken over by the Spirit of God. Our opening verses show how to make this happen. The Word says to not be drunk with wine wherein is excess, but to be filled with the Spirit, SPEAKING to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, SINGING and MAKING MELODY in your heart to the Lord. The key words are speaking, singing and making melody to the Lord. You cannot be depressed and be filled with the Spirit. You must learn to rejoice and sing to the Lord to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

My Solid Front (Confession): In the Name of Jesus, I choose to rejoice in the Lord, making melody in my heart to Him in all circumstances and consequently stay filled with the Spirit always. Amen.
