TEXT: “Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another (Galatians 5:26).

Tennis star, Boris Becker, was at the very top of the tennis world – yet he wanted to commit suicide. He said, “I had won Wimbledon twice before, once as the youngest player. I was rich. I had all the material possessions I needed … It’s the old song of movie stars and pop stars who commit suicide. They have everything, and yet they are so unhappy. I had no inner peace. I was a puppet on a string.”

Becker is not the only one to feel that sense of emptiness and desire vain glory. The echoes of a hollow life spreads through our culture. You do not have to read many contemporary magazines to find the same frustration among youths today. Always believe that there is nothing at the apex of life, except in the Lord. If your models in life are music stars, footballers, and society celebrities, then you are living in the world of fantasies. Thomas Brooks stated, “Worldly glory is but a breath, a vapour, a froth, a phantasm, a shadow, a reflection, a very nothing.” Look unto Jesus!

CHALLENGE: Make Jesus Christ your model in life.

PRAYER: Oh God, make me see only the Lord at the apex of life.

FURTHER READING: Philippians 2:3; Luke 12:16-20.
