TOPIC: BLESSINGS OF OBEDIENCE
TEXT: “If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures” (Job 36:11).
The widow knew the end had come, the famine had gone on for far too long. She was preparing for her last meal when the man of God, Elijah, appeared. His appearance was very strange and his request was equally strange; he had demanded her last meal! God worked on the widow’s heart, and she obeyed the man of God and did as she was commanded. An astounding miracle of divine supply followed, she had food enough for her household and the man of God all through the famine (1Kings 17:8-16).
Some youths want to obey God only if they understand God’s intention, but the widow did not understand Elijah, yet she obeyed. How could she have understood the prophecy of plenty given by Elijah in the midst of a severe famine? Blessed are those who obey the Lord’s commands even when they do not understand for they shall enjoy uncommon blessings from God. So, when Peter said to the Lord, “Nevertheless at thy word I will,” he set the New Testament equivalent of the Widow of Zarephath. Both individuals show us what blessings God bestows on obedient believers. Won’t you join their ranks today?
CHALLENGE: Is your obedience to God conditional or unconditional?
QUOTE: Blessed are those who obey.
PRAYER: Lord, increase my faith and my obedience. Amen
