Higher Everyday Text: “And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down” (1 Kings18:30).
Elijah ,the Tishbite, emerged as a prophet over Israel in an era of moral decadence and national ungodliness. The children of Israel had abandoned the living God who was ever faithful in delivering them from their enemies. They began to worship Baal, an idol set up by Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab. For this, the judgment of God came upon the entire nation. Something had to be done. Someone had to lead Israel into repentance to restore God’s glory.
So Elijah, the prophet, took up the challenge. He repaired the broken altar of God and challenged the prophets of Baal to call upon their gods to send down fire to consume their sacrifice. Their dead gods or idols could not answer. But the living God answered the prayer of His servant by fire. So the children of Israel were led back to God. The prophets of Baal and their idols were wiped out of the land. Imagine the high rate of ungodliness in our society today! Like Elijah, we can bring back a revival of holiness.
