While Men Slept

Text: Matthew 13:25

Matthew 13:24
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
13:25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
13:26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
13:27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? 13:28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
13:29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Let me start by saying this: It is not every sleep the believer can afford, even though he is naturally entitled to sleep. While meditating on this particular verse of the Scripture, the Holy Spirit ministered to me and said, “Some sleep can cost a man his works.” Hear Apostle Peter: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.

As believers, our principal enemy is the devil. And you see, if the devil is restless, seeking whom to devour, the believer has got no other option than to be sober, and be vigilant. Yea, it is not every sleep the believer can afford to sleep. You are not entitled to sleep just because you’ve sown. Rest belongs to those who reap.

Note that the Bible did not say, “But while men slept at night, …” Instead, it simply says, “But while men slept, … “The Bible did not even say that they servants during the day. We were only made to understand that they sowed

The next verse then started with But_If the sleep was a normal one, the word But shouldn’t have come in. So, the men slept at the wrong time. It’s just like evangelism without follow-up. Hence, the need to be sober, and be vigilant. The truth is, a man can only be sober, and be vigilant by being watchful. Jesus said, “Watch and pray …”

Revelation 3:2 Be WATCHFUL, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and WATCHING thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Mark 13:35 WATCH ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: 13:36 Lest coming suddenly he finds you sleeping….Etc.

Check through the New Testament, we will realize that the believer is often admonished to be watchful. What does it mean to watch? To watch is to pray; and to pray is to watch (Matt. 26:41).

1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and WATCH UNTO PRAYER. Can you see?

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and WATCHING thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; You see again? Watching has an affiliation with prayer.

The devil, with his nature, operates best at night (Ps. 91:5). This is why it not all sleep the believer can afford. Even though God gives His beloved sleep, Jesus raised the standard as he taught and demonstrated the need to watch.

A man naturally sleeps at night. You know, a time we feel like resting, having worked during the day. This was what happened to the men. They slept and the enemy came. He did not come until they slept. A break in watching bids the enemy come!

The devil does not dare a man of prayer or a praying church. Why? Because prayer helps us to be sensitive. A prayerful man is not ignorant of the devices of the devil. Watch and pray.

The devil is always on the move, but he only branches at the one who is asleep. Somewhat, the church is asleep. This has given the devil an opportunity to sow tares in the body of Christ. Tares of false teachings from gainsayers. Tares of Jezebelic spirits in the name of fashion and innovative wisdom. Tares of false doctrines in guise of grace-era. Tares of pride in form of boldness. Tares of unholy lifestyle feigning as spiritual maturity. Etc.

You know one funny thing about tares? 😂
Let us see the AMPC version of the Bible.
But while he was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed also darnel [WEEDS RESEMBLING WHEAT] among the wheat, and went on his way.

The devil creeps in by coming in the form with which the believer is familiar.
2 Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
2 Timothy 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

It is only when we are prayerfully watchful we can be spiritually sensitive …

Matthew 13:26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 13:27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

Note that the believers were not sensitive until they saw the tares appeared physically.

Let me just talk about DISCERNMENT. Now, the effect of sleeping is insensitivity. Prayer is one thing that activates the discerning gifts. The men were not discerning, and this made the problem grew to the extent that they could not root out the tares when they appeared.

Note this, when the devil encroaches into a man’s life unawares, it can get to the stage that the man will be left without an option than to be at the mercy of the devil.
Matthew 13:29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. 13:30 LET BOTH GROW TOGETHER until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

This is why the discerning gifts must not be lacking among believers in the last days of these last days. The faster we can discern, the better for us to root out the work of the enemy before it rear its ugly head.

The Bible says, “Test every spirit …” This is because there are weeds resembling wheat.
1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every SPIRIT THAT CONFESSETH that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

We primarily test spirits by their confession!

However, the believer has got to be full of the Word. Hebrews 4:12 For THE WORD of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and IS A DISCERNER of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

We make use of the Word as a discerner when we are full of it.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, THAT YE MAY PROVE what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
You can only make use of the Word if you are renewed by the Word in your mind.

Let me round off, please.

The devil is playing a lot of pranks in these last days. Hence, the need for every believer to be watchful. It’s not time to sleep!

1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and WATCH UNTO PRAYER.

We are urged to watch and pray more in these last days.
Also, the Word must be held unto tightly. Live a scriptural life!

I do say this, “You will never give an account of what you were taught, but what you set your heart to believe.”
Every man has access to the Bible. By the help of the Holy Spirit, get things yourself. Live on your own revelations! Enough of being a baby Christian.

When you pray, your organs of perception are activated. When you study the Word, you are able to use the organs better.

Watch and pray, and study the Word. God bless you
