EXPOSITION
Our Lord Jesus Christ set numerous valuable examples for all His folowers to emulate across all periods and regions, regardless of their race and colour. One of these examples is particularly evident in how He handled a serious personal security issue, as described in today’s devotional text. Even though He had previously passed unharmed through a hostile crowd that intended to push Him off a cliff (Lk. 4:28-30) and had performed many acts of divine authority, including walking on the turbulent sea, His response here was distinct.
There is a hymn that conveys this sentiment: “Christian, seek not yet repose, hear thy guardian angel say, thou art in the midst of foes, watch and pray.” This aligns with the consistent counsel of our Lord’s Apostles (Eph. 6:18; Jas. 4:6,7; 1 Pet. 5:8). It is a reminder to play it safe. God told prophet Jeremiah in chapter 5:26, _For among my people are wicked men. They lie in wait as one who sets snares. They set a trap, they catch men._ These individuals exist in families, churches, governments, private and public institutions, and sometimes it is wiser to avoid rather than confront them. This is exemplified by the fact that even though our Lord Jesus Christ was accompanied by at least 12 strong men with swords, He chose to prioritise playing it safe. Be wise!
