TOPIC: FOLLY OF SINNING SECRETLY

Read Psalm 139:1-12

MEMORISE:
“Can anyone hide himself in secret places, so l shall not see him?” says the Lord; “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the LORD (Jeremiah 23:24)

EXPOSITION
Sinners of every description commit in secret what they would not dare to perpetrate, if they know that the eyes of their fellow creatures were upon them. The thief takes advantage of his privacy to lay his hand upon his neighbour’s property. The adulterer watches for the return of night, when he may accomplish his wicked purposes without detection. The rapist waits for the right time to strike at his unsuspecting victim. Such conduct however is folly in the extreme. Our memory scripture for today rhetorically asks as a message from the Lord, “Can anyone hide himself in secret places, so I shall not see him?” says the Lord; “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord. This verse proclaims the Omnipresence of God. In other words, He is everywhere, and thereby, sees everything. Proverbs 15:3 says, ‘The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good’.
The Psalmist exclaimed, ‘Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?’ (Psa. 139:7-12) He is saying no matter where we hide, God is there. There is one way, and only one, in which we can hide our sins from God; and that is, by fleeing to the Lord Jesus Christ for refuge. Then, though God will behold the sinner, He will not behold the sin. (1 Jn. 1:8). Let this be remembered in reference to all the sins we have ever committed in secret, and let it teach us to seek the remission of them while yet the day of mercy is given to us. Remember the question of Elisha to Gehazi (2 Kgs. 5:26).

PRAYER POINTS

  1. Lord Jesus, give me total victory over secret sins in my life.
  2. O God, create in me a clean heart, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
  3. Holy Spirit, convict us of any secret sin in our lives, and grant us the power to overcome them, in Jesus’ name.
