Take Up Your Cross by Pastor W.F Kumuyi

TEXT: LUKE 9:23-27

MEMORY VERSE: “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (LUKE 9:23).

The cross is a symbol of discipleship. It signifies our identification with Christ. The story was told of an Indian pagan family that accepted Christ through the work of some European missionaries. His new-found faith triggered a fatal persecution that led to his death and that of his entire family. The song sung by this faithful servant of Christ, as put together by an Indian missionary, Sandhu Sundar Sing, has lasted many years and is still relevant today. The lyrics go thus:

“The cross before me,
The world behind me,
No turning back,
No turning back.”
This song underscores the importance of cross bearing in a believer’s life.

In our Bible text for today, Christ categorically stated the centrality of cross bearing in discipleship. Following Christ has two conditions – self-denial and cross bearing. No one can be a true follower of Christ without fulfilling these conditions. The gain of cross bearing far exceeds the pain; our text makes this clear. Persecutions and deprivations are part of cross bearing. Take up your cross today and you will be glad you did.

QUOTE: For me, to live is Christ.

CHALLENGE: I will take up my cross, no matter the odds.

PRAYER: Oh, Lord! Give me the grace to bear my cross daily.
